2007-2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
1. If you are checking out a student, an appointment card/slip verification must be brought in when the student returns to school.
If you are checking a student in late due to an appointment, you must have an appointment verification card/slip. If you do not, the tardy will be unexcused until one is brought in.
2. If you have moved or changed your home/work phone numbers since enrolling your child, please send the new number and address to the guidance office.
To add or remove someone from picking up your child, you must come to the main office, or send a letter with your child to bring to the main office.
3. We will not give students messages that are not an emergency. (The Principal or Assistant Principal will make that decision)
4. Any money brought in for lunch must be taken to the cafeteria.
5. Students will not be called out of class if they have forgotten something such as: Id card, clothes, projects, books, money, etc. The item will be placed in the homeroom teacher's tray for the student to receive the item the following school day.

2007-2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are still having parents who are attempting to drop off or pick up students on the Lonnie Jackson Academy side of Rothschild or directly on Hunt Avenue.
All non-bus riders must go to the front of the gym to be picked up or dropped off. Students who walk should leave the campus immediately after school. Your cooperation in these matters will be greatly appreciated by the staff. Both of these procedures are for student supervision and safety.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS, WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE. If your child arrives to school at 8:30 a.m. or later, they should report to the main office to sign in tardy BEFORE going to class. Doing this will correct the unexcused absence marked for that day to tardy. You may receive a truancy letter, or your child may acquire too many absences to be promoted at the end of the year. Also, when signing in or checking out, the student's FIRST AND LAST NAME should be used at all times. Students are to have their ID cards present when signing in tardy.
ALSO, ALL EXCUSES FOR ABSENCES are to be turned in to the homeroom teacher within 3 days of the student's return. Excuses for TARDIES are to be turned in to the main office when signing in. Please be sure your child remembers to turn in the excuse promptly.

2007-2008
Dear Rothschild Student:
On behalf of the faculty and staff, I welcome you to Rothschild Middle School. The Rothschild family has a long tradition of educational excellence. We look forward to continuing this tradition during the 2007-2008 school year.
Rothschild Middle School was built in 1966 but was known at that time as Eastway Junior High School. In 1968, the school was renamed Rothschild Junior High School in honor of Maurice D. (Phiz) Rothschild, a World War I veteran who served on the Muscogee County School Board for over twenty years. Mr. Rothschild was a product of the Muscogee County Schools. He graduated from the University of Georgia. The Rothschild Library Fund, which contributes annually to the Rothschild Media Center, was set up by Elsie Rothschild, the wife of Maurice Rothschild.
In 1992, Rothschild Junior High School officially became Rothschild Middle School. Our school mascot is the falcon, and our colors are red, white, and black. In our middle school structure, students are assigned to teams with each student on a particular team having the same academic (language arts, math, science, and social studies) teachers. Each team becomes its own little family of Rothschild students. This year we will have six academic teams in our school.
Rothschild will serve between 525 and 550 students during the 2007-2008 school year. Each one of you will play a vital role in making our school a better place for all of us. You will be expected to do your best in the classroom, and you are encouraged to participate in all areas of our school program. You are also expected to cooperate with your teachers and fellow students. Working together we can have a great year!
Sincerely,
Chris Cox
Principal

MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
ROTHSCHILD MIDDLE SCHOOL
CODE OF CONDUCT
The Rothschild Middle School Code of Conduct was developed and written using input from the following groups of individuals:
1. Teachers
2. Parents
3. Students
4. Assistant Principal
5. Guidance Department
6. Principal
This code has been formulated within the policies of the Muscogee County School District and the direction of the Muscogee County Board of Education. At the same time it must be understood that the Principal of Rothschild
Middle School has the final authority in the interpretation of the school code.
The development and implementation of this code will assist our students in developing individual responsibility for their behavior and actions, with the result being self-control. While we are concerned with the individual and his/her welfare, we must also be concerned with the group and their welfare. We must, therefore, maintain an atmosphere conducive to teaching and learning. We believe that Rothschild Middle School students must be taught respect and consideration for the personal and property rights and privileges of others. They should also be taught how to maintain a courteous relationship with teachers and fellow students and how to accomplish their work without disturbing others.
The ideal form of discipline is self-imposed, but experience shows that students have to learn self-discipline as they do anything else. Consequently, teachers are in a position of authority which students must learn to respect by their behavior, or the teacher must take necessary steps to achieve the desired positive behavior. Therefore, when the student fails to discipline himself while at school, it becomes the duty of the school to discipline the student.
WHAT AM I EXPECTED TO DO IN SCHOOL?
All students are expected to follow all rules and regulations as set forth in the Behavior Code and Discipline Policy of the Muscogee County School District and the Rothschild Code of Conduct.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I MISBEHAVE?
Most of the students at Rothschild Middle School will accept their responsibilities and discipline themselves; however, for those who cannot, the teachers must take action to help insure proper behavior. Teachers are in a position of authority to discipline students when necessary.
DISCIPLINE ADMINISTERED BY TEACHERS
Teachers may discipline students for breaking classroom rules. Teacher discipline may include afterschool detention, a writing assignment, a classroom clean-up assignment, or some alternative punishment. Students are expected to fulfill all teacher requirements regarding discipline. Failure to do so will result in the student being placed in in-school suspension.
PARENT CONFERENCE
When inappropriate behavior continues, a parent conference to discuss possible solutions will be scheduled.
SERIOUS PROBLEMS MEAN...
SATURDAY SCHOOL OR SUSPENSION
Saturday School is held from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. two Saturdays per month. Saturday School students are to bring books, paper, pen, and pencil in order to complete school assignments. Absence from Saturday School will result in out-of-school suspension.
TYPES OF SUSPENSION
A. In-School Suspension - If a student is placed in the In-School Suspension Program, this student will not be allowed to attend any school function during the suspension period. This includes attending athletic events, musical performances, and dances.
B. Out-of-School-Suspension - If a student is suspended from school, this student will not be allowed to attend any school function during the suspension period. This includes attending athletic events, musical performances, and dances. Furthermore, a suspended student is not to be on any school campus during the suspension period.
The suspension period begins at the time of suspension and ends the day the student is allowed to return to regular classes for a full day.
Parents will be sent, by mail, written notification of all suspensions - in school and out-of-school
All students, upon returning from suspension, either in-school or out-of-school, must be reinstated by the assistant principal or principal. Students who return from suspension must bring a parent or guardian for a conference unless otherwise excused by the assistant principal or principal.
It is the teacher's prerogative whether or not to allow credit for make-up work to students who are suspended out-of-school.
AVOID THIS!
FIGHTING
No student is to engage in a fight while under the authority of Rothschild Middle School. Each student has a certain responsibility and is expected to avoid physical confrontations by telling teachers or other staff members he or she has a problem. Any student(s) deemed to be guilty in a fighting situation will be subject to suspension from school.
WEAPONS
No student shall handle, possess, or transmit any offensive weapon or object that reasonably can be concluded to be a weapon within school safety zones, at school functions, on school property, or en-route to and from school. Penalty for violation of this rule will be suspension and recommendation to the Superintendent's Discipline Tribunal for long-term suspension and/or expulsion. Should a student possess a gun, knife, or any other weapon that is illegal, this student will be arrested and charged with possession of a weapon.
GANGS
Students may be suspended or expelled for involvement in gang activity.
Membership in or affiliation with gangs shall not be permitted.
Wearing of any insignia and/or uniforms or other means of gang identification is not permitted.
Using or making signs, signals, or other means of gang communication or identification is not permitted.
Gathering on school property or at school functions for any purpose by gang members is prohibited.
No student shall use, in any way, his or her gang membership to recruit, threaten, intimidate, or harass verbally or physically other students or employees of Muscogee County School District.
TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, NARCOTICS, STIMULANTS, AND OTHER DANGEROUS DRUGS
Students shall not possess, transmit, or use tobacco in any form.
Students are prohibited from possessing, using, selling, transmitting, intending to transmit, or being under the influence of alcohol and substances made illegal by Georgia Code.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other inappropriate oral, written, or physical conduct of a sexual nature when made by a member of the school staff to a student or when made by any student to another student or system employee constitutes sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment, as defined above, may include but is not limited to the following:
1. Verbal harassment
2. Pressure for sexual activity
3. Unwelcome touching
4. Repeated remarks to a person with sexual or demeaning implications
5. Suggesting or demanding sexual involvement accompanied by implied or explicit threats concerning ones' grades, job, etc.
Any person, employee, or student who alleges sexual harassment by a staff member or a student in the school district may complain directly to the principal, assistant principal, or guidance counselors.
IN GENERAL, REFRAIN FROM:
1. Behavior which threatens the security, safety, or well being of other students and faculty, or other school personnel on the school campus or at a school sponsored activity;
2. Behavior which threatens the orderly operation of the school or school sponsored activity;
3. Cheating, stealing, gambling, or extortion;
4. Defacing or damaging public school property (including altering grades on report cards);
5. Excessive tardiness;
6. Any conduct not specifically cited herein that is deemed to affect the health and safety of other students or school personnel and/or to disrupt the educational process and/or be inappropriate for Rothschild Middle School.
THINGS I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
ARRIVING TOO EARLY
Students are not allowed to gather on the grounds before school begins. Students must report directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or the gym upon arrival each morning. If a person must arrive prior to 7:45 a.m., he/she must submit a letter for approval to the assistant principal. Students may enter the building at 8:15 a.m. to go to their lockers and then report to homeroom. Once students arrive on campus, they are not permitted to leave campus without permission from school officials.
ARRIVING LATE
All students are expected to arrive at school on time and will be late after 8:25 a.m.
All students who are tardy are to report to the main office to sign in after 8:30. If you are late between 8:25-8:30, you must report to your homeroom. Students who are late should bring a written note from home. Oversleeping (by parent or student) and/or missing the bus, running errands, or baby-sitting, etc, will not be accepted as valid excuses for tardiness.
Students arriving at school after 11:40 a.m. will be counted absent for that day. Students who check out before
11:40 a.m. and do not return to school will be counted absent for that day.
STAYING AFTER SCHOOL
Students are expected to clear the building and grounds immediately after school unless the student is under the supervision of a teacher. No student is expected to leave campus and then return to catch the bus. If students are waiting for parents to pick them up, they are to wait in front of the gym. All parents are urged to pick students up as soon as possible. Supervision for students waiting on rides will not be available after 3:35 p.m. Students who ride a bus will be called to the bus loading area when their bus arrives. Students arriving to the bus loading area early will be assigned Saturday School.
ATTENDANCE
PHILOSOPHY
The administration and staff of Rothschild Middle School believe that regular attendance is necessary to fully realize the benefits of educational opportunity. Students who attend on a regular basis will have a better opportunity to receive instruction that is continual and in logical progression. The best learning takes place when students are present on a daily basis, contributing through the regular exchange of ideas, and receiving direction under the supervision of a certified staff member.
POLICY/PROCEDURE
Upon returning to school after an absence, the student will be required to bring a note from home or documentation of appointment. If returning during the school day, students must bring the proper documentation that verifies the absence, check in at the office to pick up a pass, and then report to class. If the parent or guardian does not send a note addressing their child's absence, an unexcused absence or tardy will be applied.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
Personal illness and professional appointments
Serious illness or death of a member of the family
Emergencies calling for the student's services or presence at home
Obligatory religious observances
Participation in a district-approved or school-sponsored activity
Other absences, which are deemed necessary by the parents and approved in advance by the administration
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Absences for reasons other than those listed above are generally considered unexcused. An unexcused absence means credit does not have to be given for work missed. With accordance to the guidelines, the principal reserves the right to make a determination if the absence is justified and if the student will be allowed to make up the classroom work missed.
TARDY TO SCHOOL OR CLASS
Being on time to school and class is important. The student should be in their classroom before the bell rings (8:25 A.M.).
Tardy students must first report to the office when arriving at school and sign in. They will also pick up a tardy slip to show their teacher. If a student gets to class without a pass, the teacher will send them back to the office.
MORE STUFF I NEED TO KNOW
MEDICATION
Medication must be turned in to the guidance department before school and must be properly labeled. A medical authorization form is required for each student receiving medication during school hours. This form must be completed and signed by the parent or guardian. Forms are available in the guidance office.
If a student is on medication or for a medical reason must be excused for bathroom privileges, he/she must have a note from the parent. This note will be adequate for up to ten (10) school days. An extension beyond 10 days will require a note from a doctor. Students must have a pass from the guidance office to leave class to take medication.
STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The Muscogee County School District offers student accident insurance to all students in the Muscogee County School District. This insurance is available to you at a nominal fee. If you are interested, please contact your principal; and he/she can let you know who the contact person is for obtaining this coverage.
If you do not wish to take out Student Accident Insurance, your child's health insurance is your responsibility.
The Muscogee County School District does not carry health coverage on students.
IF I GET SICK AT SCHOOL...
Students who are ill should report to the guidance department with a note from the teacher.
Parents, if your child is ill, please do not send him/her to school.
Students with contagious illnesses, such as pink-eye, will not be allowed to attend school until cleared by a physician.
WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS
In order for a student to be placed on progress reports, the student's parent(s) must come to the school for a conference with all of the student's teachers.
IF I NEED A SCHEDULE CHANGE...
Schedules for students are developed after much deliberation on the part of the staff and administration at Rothschild Middle School. If a schedule problem arises, the student should see the guidance counselor.
YOU ARE NOT WELCOME AT...
1. Other school campuses (Lonnie Jackson Academy, etc.)
2. Private property en route to and from school
3. Inside the building prior to the opening of school or after 3:35 p.m.
4. Teacher's work room
5. The bus loading area if I do not ride a bus
6. Any area of the school campus unless I am scheduled to be there or unless I have an official pass (during the day)
SCHOOL TELEPHONE
Main office and guidance office phones are used in cases of illness or emergency only.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION I NEED TO KNOW...
LOCKERS
Lockers are rented to students for $5.00 per year. This fee covers the expense of changing combinations and replacing hardware on each locker each year. Each student has the opportunity to rent a locker and keep only his or her possessions in that locker. Lockers are not to be shared. Students are only allowed to go to their lockers at specified times during the day.
Students who rent lockers are expected to cooperate with the following:
1. Use only the locker that has been assigned to you.
2. Do not allow other students to learn your combination.
3. Each locker has a built-in combination lock. No other locks are to be placed on lockers.
4. Use your locker only at the time scheduled.
5. Keep lockers neat, and do not attach pictures to the interior with glue, paste, or tape.
6. Realize that lockers are school property and that the administration has the right to conduct locker inspections and/or searches when the need arises.
7. The use of other means to open a locker (kicking or hitting with a book) other than with the combination is prohibited.
LOST AND FOUND
Lost books and lost clothing will be put in the custodian's office.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR SCHOOL PROPERTY
Students are responsible for textbooks, library books, calculators, or any other school property issued to them or made available for their use. Payment for any damaged, lost, or stolen item is the responsibility of the student to whom the item was issued.
STUDENTS WHO MOVE OR CHANGE PHONE NUMBERS
If you move to another address or change your phone number, you must report your new address and/or phone number to the office.
IF I MOVE TO ANOTHER SCHOOL...
There is a 24 hour waiting period after requesting a withdrawal before you can pick up the student's withdrawal papers.
Parent or guardian must sign withdrawal and provide the new phone number and address of new residence.
The waiting period is 48 hours if you are requesting a withdrawal after you have moved. Parent or guardian must provide the new phone number and address of new residence.
WHEN WE HAVE A VISITOR...
Parents and adult visitors who have business to conduct are welcome at Rothschild. Visitors should report to the main office as soon as they arrive on campus. Visitors will be given a visitor's pass to wear while they are on campus.
Parents are not to report to a classroom without permission from the office.
Only a student's parents/guardians are allowed to attend classes with the student.
IF YOU ARE LATE TO CLASS...
All students are expected to be in each class on time. Teachers will deal with students who are late to class. After a student enters his/her classroom, he/she will not be allowed to leave without a pass.
IF I NEED TO DO MAKE-UP WORK...
A student may request make-up work for an excused absence. Make-up work must be arranged within three days after the last date of absence. It is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REQUEST MAKE-UP WORK! Work must be completed by the deadline specified by the teacher.
Each teacher decides whether or not to allow credit for work made up for a suspension or other unexcused absence.
USING THE MEDIA CENTER
The media center provides students and teachers a place to read from a wealth of information. The media specialist is ready to help you.
Hours: 8:25 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Individuals may report to the media center from classes using a pass completed by a teacher. Students must have their photo I.D. card to check out a book. The first I.D. card is free. Replacement cards cost $5.00. Students may check out two books for up to two weeks. Students with overdue books will not be allowed check out until the book is returned or paid for. Report cards are held for students with overdue books. Overdue notices are issued each week.
Gum and candy are not allowed in the media center.
An Acceptable Use Policy Agreement (AUP) must be signed by both parent/guardian and student before a student can use the Internet.
Classes, accompanied by the teacher, may report to the media center when prior arrangements have been made.
Library books from the regular collection may be checked out for a two-week period. The student I.D. card is required to check out books.
Reference books and magazines are to be used in the media center.
Current magazines and newspapers for leisure reading are in the periodical section. If you need a magazine for reference, look up your topic in the READER'S GUIDE, give the media specialist the name and date of the magazine you need, and she will get it for you.
Fines are charged for lost or damaged books. Books are considered lost when they are two weeks overdue and must be returned or paid for promptly. Report cards will be held if there is an outstanding fine.
Responsible students move about quietly, do not interfere with other students at work, speak only in low tones and then, only when necessary so that they will not disturb others, and clean up their work area.
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY...
TORNADO
Upon announcement of SEVERE WEATHER WARNING OR TORNADO WARNING, teachers will move students to the safest area of the school building as previously designated. CAUTION: Auditoriums, cafeterias, and all other rooms having wide span roofs should be avoided. Stay away from windows, but do not leave the building. Students will sit on the floor as near to the wall as possible, facing the brick surface. A listing of areas to be used during a tornado warning is posted in each room.
FIRE
The fire alarm is a series of short ear-piercing bells. When this alarm sounds, everyone should exit the building immediately. Students will exit in single file and move out and away from the building.
Students will not talk while leaving the building. The first week of school each teacher will explain which exit to use from his/her room.
SOME GOOD ADVICE
1. Bicycles must be placed in the bike racks and locked. Students should not ride bicycles belonging to someone else.
2. This is a smoke free environment. Smoking is not allowed on school campus.
3. Pupils should avoid bringing large amounts of money and other valuables to school.
4. Lockers should be locked securely when you leave them. Keep your locker combination to yourself.
5. Students should avoid accidents by not running or scuffling in the hall. No yelling.
6. Students should move in a quiet and orderly manner between classes.
7. Student behavior in school should always be guided by the principle of common courtesy and a spirit of cooperativeness. You must respect ALL teachers, other staff members, and other students.
8. Take part in as many school-sponsored activities as possible. Then school becomes more fun.
PRACTICE GOOD LUNCHROOM MANNERS
1. Have your student I.D. card with you every day. Replacement cost for the card is $5.00.
2. Do not run in the halls or on the grounds while going to or from the cafeteria.
3. Line up in the cafeteria as instructed by your teacher.
4. Do not break line. Wait your turn.
5. Go through the line orderly, quickly, and quietly.
6. Sit down to eat, and do not get up until you finish.
7. When you finish eating, return your tray to the window. Do not leave your tray on the table.
8. Do not leave a messy table or throw food.
9. When lunch is over, leave the cafeteria as instructed by your teacher.
10. Think of lunchtime as a meal away from home. Use the same good manners you would use at home.
Note: Food and drinks from outside vendors (McDonald's, Burger King, etc.) are not allowed. No food or drink may be taken out of the cafeteria.
BUS RULES
1. Keep your hands, arms, and head inside the bus at all times.
2. Loud talking and laughter are not allowed.
3. Horseplay is not permitted at the bus stop or on the bus.
4. Never tamper with the bus.

ACTIVITIES
All dances are two hours long. Please make arrangements to leave promptly at the end of the dance.
Only students from Rothschild are admitted to dances. Those who enter the dance must stay until the dance ends unless picked up by their parents. Phones will not be available for use. Parents are urged to be here promptly at the end of the dance to pick up children.
Please dress appropriately and neatly for dances. Students who do not dance appropriately will not be allowed to attend school dances.
Remember - dances are school functions; therefore, you must abide by all school rules when attending dances.
Sporting events represent you and your school. Please behave in a sportsmanlike way. Booing is not allowed.
Treat teams and fans from opposing schools as your guests. You would expect the same at their school.
Sporting events usually end around 6:30 p.m. Have someone pick you up at that time.
Anyone not displaying sportsmanship or causing a disturbance will be asked to leave.
Please take your seat and stay there - walking around disturbs the teams and the fans by obstructing their view.
Students are expected to leave the school campus immediately following any extra - curricular activity. Any student still on campus thirty minutes after the end of a school sponsored activity will not be allowed to attend other extracurricular activities.
IF I WANT TO BE AN ATHLETE...
It is our goal to have Rothschild athletes work hard and to be well behaved both in the classroom and on the field/court.
To encourage good academic performance, grades will be monitored throughout the year, and a study hall will be established. Progress reports will provide academic information on athletes at the middle of each nine weeks, and report cards will provide grade information at the end of each nine weeks.
The rules of the Muscogee County School District Athletic Association will be used to determine eligibility for student participation in athletics. These rules prohibit student participation in athletics if the student has attained his/her 15th birthday prior to September 1 of the current school year. These rules also limit a student’s participation in athletics to two years in a middle school program. In addition, certain grade requirements must be met in order to qualify for athletic competition.
Sixth grade students are not eligible for athletic competition. Seventh and eighth grade students must have passed the required number of subjects the previous semester in order to meet eligibility requirements.
Academic eligibility can be regained for the first semester of the next year by passing the required number of courses in summer school. Academic eligibility can be regained for the second semester of a school year by passing the required subjects during the first semester of that year.
Other eligibility requirements may be imposed by the Muscogee County School District Athletic Association.
Athletes must have an annual physical examination prior to participation in any tryout, practice, or conditioning.
Athletes will report to study hall at the time specified by the head coach.

Student Dress Code
All Students
It is not the intent of the Muscogee County School District to dictate the quality or style of clothing worn, but rather an effort to encourage good habits and acceptable group behavior. Student dress and personal appearance should reflect dignity and pride in oneself and in the school. Therefore, a student shall not dress, groom, or wear or use emblems, insignias, badges or other symbols where the effect thereof is to distract unreasonably the attention of other students or otherwise to cause disruption or interference with the operation of the school.
It is prohibited for any student to wear clothing items which advertise alcoholic beverages, sex, tobacco, obscene, crude or suggestive messages or use of profanity. Designs or insignias that are part of a haircut, satanic symbols, gang-related badges, insignias and colors; logos or symbols with denigrate social or ethnic groups are also prohibited. Fake alcohol or drug advertisement is also disallowed.
Individual schools are permitted to designate uniforms or apparel for student to wear. The schools shall present their choice to the Board of Education for review. Students who have financial reasons and can demonstrate that they cannot afford to purchase or acquire a uniform shall not be denied admission to school for that reason.
